Frequently Asked Questions – Mold, Alloy, Bullet, Lube Choices

Commonly used mold and lubricant choices.

Alloys:
  • Lino: Linotype, an alloy of lead, tin and antimony known for hardness and ease of casting. Originally used in typesetting machines which is where the name originates.
  • WW: Wheel weight, an alloy of lead, tin and antimony known for ease of acquiring and ease of casting.
  • 20/1: An alloy of 20 parts lead and 1 part tin.

In the following tables;

1. Mold #: The manufacturer’s identification number, there is not always a number on custom molds and the line will be blank in this instance
2. Bullet Weight: This is the weight of the bullet with lube and gascheck, ready to shoot.
3. Dia. Nose: This is the diameter of the nose as the bullet is loaded and ready to shoot.

  • Tapered means the bullet is a design where the nose is not a constant section.
  • Bullet diameters are often .001 or .002 inch larger than the nominal; bore diameter to guide the bullet into the lands.

4. Dia. Base: This is the diameter of the base as the bullet is loaded and ready to shoot.

  • This dimension is often after the bullet is sized and the gascheck is applied.

5. Alloy: The lead and tin, or more commonly, the lead, tin, and antimony blend used to cast the bullet.

  • The greater the amount of alloying agents the lighter the bullet.
  • Tin aids the bullet alloy to flow and fill out the mold, antimony aids the bullet hardness.
  • Antimony is the only metal whose molecular structure does not round as it cools and this aids bullet definition.

6. Lube: The lubricant used to seal the bore and aid the bullet’s passage on its way to the target.
