Would anyone like to have a multi-cavity clone of the Lyman #452374 Devastator 180gr HP 45 ACP mould? Lyman only makes this mould in a single cavity configuration, with the removable hollow point pin. Here's a link to Lyman's website for details:  http://www.lymanproducts.com/lyman/bullet-casting/mould-details.php?entryID=30>http://www.lymanproducts.com/lyman/bullet-casting/mould-details.php?entryID=30   There aren't many other 45 ACP hollow point moulds available in the 180gr weight range.   I would like to have a multi-cavity version of this mould, with captive pins to speed up the casting process. I started an interest thread on the NOE Forum to try to generate some interest in a group buy for one of these. If you would like to have one too, please go to the interest thread and say so:  http://noebulletmolds.com/smf/index.php/topic,796.0.html>http://noebulletmolds.com/smf/index.php/topic,796.0.html   Thanks,   Dave

Glen Fryxell's book, “From Ingot to Target, A Cast bullet Guide for Handgunners", (available free on the LASC wesite) has a lot of really good information on cast hollow point bullets in Chapter 13, “Casting Hollow Pointed Bullets". See:  http://www.lasc.us/Fryxell_Book_Chapter_13_CastingHPBullets.htm>http://www.lasc.us/FryxellBookChapter13CastingHPBullets.htm   In Chapter 13, Glen discusses the Lyman #452374 Devastator 180gr HP too. He said: “When launched with 7.5 grains of Unique, they deliver right at 1100 fps, and with very good accuracy from a full-size Kimber 1911. This bullet feeds quite nicely too."   Glen also said: “It expands easily, and cycles smoothly in 1911's."   There's a lot more interesting info there too. Check it out.   Thanks,   Dave

The Lyman 452374 180gr Devastator mould is basically a round nose/flat point configuration, with the single hollow point pin. It isn't exactly the same as the Lyman 452374 round nose only mould which casts a nominal 225gr round nose bullet.

As such, a NOE clone of the Devastator 180gr hollow point mould would come with both flat point and hollow point pins, so it would be much more versatile than the original Lyman mould. I believe with flat point pins, this mould would have to produce a round nose/flat point bullet somewhere in the 210gr to 215gr weight range.

How does that sound to you?

If you're not familiar with how the NOE RG (removable guide) hollow point pin system works, this link should explain it pretty well for you: http://noebulletmoulds.com/smf/index.php/topic,199.0.html

One of the members on the NOE Forum brought up the fact that about three years ago, NOE ran a group buy for the NOE 453 186gr FP-PB RG/HP mould. This bullet is very similar to the Lyman 452 180gr Devastator. The existing NOE bullet mould casts as a 215gr round nose/flat point, or a 186gr hollow point. The biggest difference I can see is that the NOE design has a squared off lube groove, while the Lyman Devastator has more rounded off lube groove. I can't comment on the size of the meplat, however, because I don't have the dimensions for the size on the Lyman bullet.

Al Nelson at NOE could do an “Inventory Run” of his existing NOE 453 186gr HP design. One advantage of doing the inventory run would be it would only take 5 people to sign-up for it to get it back into production, whereas, it would take at least 10 people to sign-up for a new design before Al would order the tooling. You could still get the 15% discount from the catalog price by signing-up for the inventory rerun of the old design too.

Here are the drawings for the existing NOE 453 186gr HP design:

What do you think about this one?

Since we have two different bullet designs under discussion now, I thought it might make more sense to start a separate thread for doing an Inventory Rerun of the existing NOE 453 186gr HP/215gr FP for those who want it, and still have the original Interest Thread for doing a new run of a Lyman Devastator 180gr HP multi-cavity clone for those who want that design.

Anyone who signs-up for either of these designs would be able to get the 15% group buy discount from the catalog price too.

To sign-up for the Lyman Devastator 180gr HP Interest Thread, go to: http://noebulletmolds.com/smf/index.php/topic,796.0.html

To sign-up for the NOE 453 186gr HP/215gr FP Inventory Rerun, go to: http://noebulletmolds.com/smf/index.php/topic,823.0.html

You can sign-up for one, or the other, or both if you want too. B)

Thanks,

Dave

We only need 2 more people to sign-up for the Inventory Rerun of the NOE 453 186gr HP/215gr FP to put this mould back into production. There must be 2 more of you out there who want one!

Please sign-up now at: http://noebulletmolds.com/smf/index.php/topic,823.0.html>http://noebulletmolds.com/smf/index.php/topic,823.0.html

Thanks,

Dave   Edit. Unfortunately, Al Nelson no longer has the tooling to do a rerun of this previous NOE bullet mould. As a result, al has started an Active Group Buy thread for an actual Lyman Devastator bullet clone. Either of the flat point versions of these moulds would be great for someone who is concerned about cutting back on the amount of lead they are using, to help conserve their lead supply. For 45 ACP shooters, if you compare the amount of cast lead bullets you can get from a 20 lb pot of lead, with a 180gr cast bullet you would get about 170 more bullets than you would with a 230gr bullet from each pot.

Either of these NOE moulds would be available in 2 cavity, 4 cavity, and 5 cavity versions, as well as in either aluminum or brass. Lyman/RCBS and SAECO style top punches are available too. The regular catalog price for a standard NOE 2 cavity aluminum mould is $79.00. With your 15% group buy discount, your actual cost would be just $67.15. The regular catalog price for a hollow point NOE 2 cavity aluminum mould is $103.00. With your 15% group buy discount, your actual cost would be just $87.55.

Apparently Al Nelson wasn't able to do a rerun of the existing NOE 453 186gr HP mould. Al started a new Active Group Buy thread for what is an actual Lyman 452374 Devastator 180gr HP clone. The new Active Group Buy thread will be for either a 2 cavity or 4 cavity mould, in either brass or aluminum. The mould will come with hollow point, cup point, and flat point pins. Blank pins will also be available for anyone who wants to make their own customized pins too. Also, Lyman/RCBS and SAECO style top punches will be available. As usual, the 15% group buy discount from the catalog price will apply for anyone signing-up for the Group Buy.

Here's a link to the new Active Group Buy sign-up thread, which has the actual drawings and specifications for this fine design: http://noebulletmolds.com/smf/index.php/topic,838.0.html>http://noebulletmolds.com/smf/index.php/topic,838.0.html Please go there to sign-up for this mould.

Thanks,

Dave

We've had a really good response to this Group Buy so far. Nine (9) people has signed-up already. We need one more to join in so AL Nelson will order the tooling, and schedule the production run.

This bullet mould is based on the Lyman Devastator 180gr HP. As a hollow point, the NOE 453 187gr HP would be great for varmint shooting or personal defense. As a round nose/flat point, the NOE 453 213gr RF would punch nice, clean holes in paper targets. Either way, this bullet would really help you to conserve your lead supply.

I want to thank everyone who has signed up for this Group Buy! This one went really fast!

Al Nelson has listed a LAST CALL for the NOE Lyman Devastator/Flying Ashtray 187gr HOLLOW POINT mould group buy. The estimated closing date is 6/8/15.

There's still time to join in and get your 15% group buy discount. Sign-up now at: http://noebulletmolds.com/smf/index.php/topic,838.0.html
