.32 ACP conversion on Remington 580

Andy Evans converted a Remington Model 580 single-shot bolt action .22 LR to center-fire and relined and rechambered to .32 ACP for me.

I recently chronographed a few .32 ACP +P high performance loads I have been testing in my Walther PP, just to see what they would do in a longer 22” rifle barrel.  The results are interesting:

Buffalo Bore 75-grain cast lead FN factory load 1163 fps, 14 Sd, 37 ES for n=10 rds.

Accurate 31-077B, Starline case, CCI 500, 5.6 grs. Alliant #2400 OAL 0.945” 1244 fps, 37 Sd, 94 ES n= 10 rds.

Accurate 31-090V, Starline case, CCI 500, 5.6 grs. Alliant #2400 OAL 0.945” 1235 fps, 17 Sd, 41 ES n= 10 rds.

Accurate 31-095T, Starline case, CCI 500, 3.0 grs. AutoComp, OAL 0.945” 1113 fps, 4 Sd, 10 ES n=10 rds!

Accurate 31-095T, Starline case, CCI 500 1.7 grs. Bullseye, OAL 0.945", 841 fps, 16 Sd, 44 ES n=10 rds.

Accurate 31-095T, Starline case, CCI 500 2.5 grains AutoComp OAL 0.945", 984 fps, 17 Sd, 43 ES n=10 rds.

Interesting to note 31-077B was accurate even at 100 yards, firing 4-inch groups off sandbags with 4X Bushnell Banner .22 scope.  A few rounds with 5.6 #2400 with Accurate 31-087T were also adequate to ring the 12” gong at 100 yards in casual offhand shooting.  I need to chronograph them from the rifle and shoot groups...

The large meplat 090V and 095T bullets were accurate at 25 yards, but shot completely wild at 100 yards...

Edited 2 Jan 2017 to include additional chronograph and baseline accuracy data:

RWS 73-grain FMJ, 1214 fps, 29 Sd, n=10, five consecutive 5-shot groups at 25 yds. 0.82"

Fiocchi 73-grain FMJ, 943 fps, 30 Sd, n=10, five consecutive 5-shot groups at 25 yds. 0.99"

Fiocchi 60-grain JHP, 1463 fps, 22 Sd, n= 10, five consecutive 5-shot groups at 25 yds. 1.27"

71-grain Magtech .312” FMJ, 2.5 grains Bullseye, Winchester case, WSP, OAL 0.97” 1104 fps, 18 Sd, n=10, five consecutive 5-shot groups at 25 yds. 1.02"

Sounds like a really fun conversion. Will most any bolt action .22 LR lend itself to this conversion?

I would want a strong action because .32 ACP run over 20,000 psi in Euro and +P loadings like the Buffalo Bore. You also have a larger case with greater surface area than .22 LR, which increases backthrust against the bolt face.  The 580 series Remingtons are very strong. I have seen them done to 7.62x25mm.

The 580 series barrels are called “pencil barrels” over on the RFC forums.  The liner must be near as thick as the barrel at the muzzle end!  I'm going down to measure one of mine just to see.  Did you use an action with the pinned bolt head, or one of the ones that rotates?  I have one of each.

Pinned bolt head, pinned barrel.  Conversions for the higher pressure rounds thread the receiver, but not needed in .32 ACP.

You are correct on the liner.

More velocity and accuracy data:

RWS 73-grain FMJ, 1214 fps, 19 Sd, five consecutive 5-shot groups at 25 yds. avg. 0.82"

Fiocchi 73-gr. FMJ, 943 fps, 22 Sd, five consecutive 5-shot groups at 25 yds. avg. 0.99"

Accurate 31-095T 2.0 Bullseye, 1037 fps, 15 Sd, five consecutive 5-shot groups at 25 yds. avg. 1.09"

Accurate 31-077B  5.6 grs. Alliant #2400, previously chronographed, five consecutive 5-shot groups at FIFTY YARDS 2.35"

Accurate 31-090V 5.6 grs. Alliant #2400, previously chronographed, five consecutive 5-shot groups at FIFTY YARDS 2.40"

When I made my bunny gun, I did it differently since it is in 32 H&R Magnum. First the barrel is glued in with the $25 per 1/10 oz stuff they use for shotgun mono-blocks and it has not been a problem. Also since I'm an '03 guy, the extractor design is more like a Springfield and the ejector is like a pre-64 Winchester Model 70. The bolt head is non-rotating and the ejector is the bolt head guide.  HTH, Ric

Any ideas for a extra lightweight (bunny gun) in .22 Hornet?

Check the GunBroker listings for .22 Hornet single-shot rifles and you might get lucky

http://www.gunbroker.com/item/610215623 - a Peterrlongo Hornet

http://www.gunbroker.com/item/609224713 - a nice .250 which could be relined

http://www.gunbroker.com/item/610681555 - another relining candidate with extra 32-ga. shotgun barrel

http://www.gunbroker.com/item/606764284 - Savage 23D boltgun C&R eligible

http://www.gunbroker.com/item/609617621 - Winchester 43 boltgun

BUT to get one around 4 pounds you will have to find a light action and then have it built.

The Remington 580 group of actions are too short of bolt throw. Before my present project, I considered 7.62x25, but looking at all the possible changes, I just could not get enough length of throw to make it work. I could eject the fired case BUT could not eject an unfired bulleted cartridge with my favorite load for the pistols without pulling the bolt from the action. I don't consider that safe to not be able to unload the rifle.

The Savage 23D are nice Hornets, but with iron sights weigh 6 pound and 4+ oz. They are as accurate as any of the Hornets except the new CZ's.

Thanks for the suggestions. Those GB gems are out of my price range. I have an H&R single shot that I reamed out to .22 K Hornet. Never weighed it but it's light. And is a late version with the 9” twist and 20” barrel with open sights. I'll work with that. That frame has a similar barrel in .223. Super bunny?

Here is a group fired on the 12” gong at 100 yards to zero the 4X Bushnell scope for plinking.  Load was Accurate 31-077B with a compressed charge of 5.9 grains of #2400 in .32 ACP.  First shot fired while holding on the top of the gong using 50-yard zero struck low 5:00.  Holding the gun carefully on the sandbags I then cranked the scope adjustments to zero the crosshairs on the bullet strike, then fired another shot holding on the mounting bolt, which you see hit.  I then fired a group on the gong holding center of mass.  Not Camp Perry target accuracy, but sure plenty good enough for having fun plinking clay birds on the dirt bank or for standing practice shooting at the gong!

You can get a lot of “bunny rabbits” with that 100 yard group Ed.
