I have often thought there must be a better way for quotes to appear on this forum. It should be easy to see what is quoted and the response. Finally (sometimes I'm slow) I have discovered how the developers made that possible. So here it is:

When you quote and the post editor opens "unclick" the BLOCKQUOTE " button. The italicized quote ends and your response goes to a new line without italics.

I'm guessing that you are also able to break up a quote. I'll see and post about that later.
