HUMIDITY

At the range Monday the bolt wouldn't come out of my M52 Win, the trigger wouldn't go far enough forward. A throng of advisors gathered, advice was given. Out of the stock or with loosened stock screws, problem gone. Tight stock screws, problem back. The stock grew in the humidity.

High humidity and hot here. A gun brought from A/C indoors to garage or outside has condensed moisture all over.

Leave gun in the garage in a hard case = no moisture absorbed? No, the m52 was kept in garage, in hard case.

Today, after being inside since Monday, tight stock screws and bolt comes out. Stock dried enough.

Inside or garage or ? A/C or no? What do you do in this situation?

.... two words ... pillar bedding ....  use pillars on the two main stock screws, then " glass " the recoil feature ... then clearance everything else, action and barrel.

the pillars extend from the bottom of the action to the head of the stock screw, the screws tighten solely on the pillars, not any wood.  ( oh, plus the floor plate/trigger guard metal if you use that .

we also have high humidity here in iowa and we were able to use those pretty wood stocks with the pillar treatment.   can you imagine a classic m52 with a sissy plastic stock ?   yeccchh ...

************

besides, the above method is simple, pretty easy and only uses $1.65 of devcon ...

ken

oh, if you give me the needed pillar lengths, i will send you down a few.

I don't think so, Ken. Pillar bedding keeps wooden stocks from compressing, I've got wood expanding. The barrel band and the close fitting Marksman stock make bedding sorta complex, and this rifle has been operating fine since 1925..

And, the Mossberg 44US (barrel band) and the Rem 513T are 1 screw upward-pressure-by-stock-on-barrel situations.

The obvious solution is dry stocks and polyurethane all surfaces, but...

I'm looking for the obvious easy fix/procedure, I'm going to all in A/C, hard case to range and back, to A/c again. But, the condensation...

Thanks;

While I live in the desert and have the opposite problem, we have found a solution that doesn't modify the stock. We remove and clean the interior than apply coats of Daley's Benite wood sealer ,originally made for sail boats in Seattle. This thin as water and seals and hardens the wood surface. The trick is not to put it on the outside and leave the tong/linseed exterior finish. This way moisture goes in and out slowly. RIG grease on the metal when warm will prevent rust if used every time before putting it in hard case from air conditioning to the environment. A two inch sheep skin soaked pad will do it in 30 seconds.
