To put a Marlin XS7 barrel, 223, on a Savage M10 action, I ground ~.2" off the FRONT of a Savage barrel nut. Everything fit, headspaced fine.
This after hours of assembling, measuring. disassembling, measuring... The Savage barrel nut front end goes over the unthreaded part of the Savage barrel---it does NOT fit over the too-big unthreaded part of the Marlin barrel.
NOTE: A FL sized 223 case protrudes from the/a Savage barrel ~.130"/.140"; and from a Marlin barrel ~ .150"-.160".

If I understand this right, then the Marlin barrel had .23/.24" protruding while in the Marlin rifle.
If so Marlin must have thought that was OK???? Like Mike, that seems like a heck of a lot and for what purpose I wonder? Needed because of extractor design??? I don't have a sectioned 223 case handy so have no idea of thickness at that point.

It looked wrong to me too. I took everything apart, FL sized new brass, measured Savage and Marlin protrusion, Marlin now ~.150"-.160". Looks a lot better. All together, loaded, shoot tomorrow. ???Why the error???

... joeb ... when i converted your 223 to a 22-250 i aimed for 0.125 with a headspace gauge ...
you might be showing why we really should use a gauge. and yeah, if someone wants an " econo-job " i do sometimes use new factory brass .... hopefully try several brands ....
even brand name gauges give different results ... heh ... ... still, 0.030 seems a lot ... for medium cast loads it probably is no problem .

i might mention that on my ruger3 in 45-70, there is zero extra clearance in that cut for the extractor to bottom ... a slight factory error ... if i don't fire the cartridge, it might not allow the extractor to get under the rim ... maybe marlin is guaranteeing their extractor to work with least hand fitting. i bet they don't have * bolt bump * case rim fitting either ...

68 gr bullets won't stay on a 2' X 2' paper at 100 yards. Pourquoi? 9" twist , measured with my Stanley tape.

joeb ... i like that project ... if you haven't seen it, here is an interesting post where they put a savage barrel on a marlin x7 ... they mention 0.015 as an " adjustment " ...

let me know if i can help ..... always convert it to 22-250 ...
how can a system that should shoot into the same hole shoot 12 inch " flyers " ... wonder how much worse an * outliar * would be ?? ....

10/25/18 68 GR BULLETS WON'T STAY ON THE PaPER AT 100 YARDS.
40 GR BULLETS, 3 IN .5", 5 IN 1.225", 5 IN .9".
It's the twist, my other 9" twist barrels stabilize the 68 gr, and shoot well < 1" 100 yd 5 shot 5 group avg.

I have put several Savage barrels on the Marlin X7. You need to take a mill file, blacken the bbl face and shave off enuf so that when properly headspaced the bolt head does not hit the bbl face. Some "experts" will go one and on about the "unsupported case hard", apparently unaware that the 03' Springfield and M70 with a coned breech leave far more of the case head unsupported. Just bought a Rem 783 barrel in 6.5 CM (same thread as Savage) that I will adapt to my M10 Savage 308 Tactical.
My "most fun" conversion was a 22-250 savage bbl that I put on a 30-06 X7. It was free as it had a burr in the neck. I ran my 22-06 (yes 22-06) reamer into it. With the the slow twist, I could push as 45 gr TSX at 4200 fps (no other bullet worked). Silly but fun and vaporized gophers.
Barrel vise, nut wrench and headspace gauges and you're food to go.
