started shooting handguns again after almost 30 years. can't shoot from the bench worth squat. off hand is worse. how do you guys shoot from the bench. such as;resting bbl. on bags or just resting the butt on a bag. i bought a bulls bag to rest my forearms and that seems to help some. but, was wondering if i should rest the bottom of the bbl.?

porthos,
I've found it doesn't seem to matter if I rest the barrel or the frame of a revolver on the bag, however the "bag" can't be hard. We have some home-made pistol rests at the club that are some 2x4 covered with thin carpet. I used them a few times and wondered why my pistols were shooting so poorly. I use a shot bag filled with sand, and slip it inside a piece of automotive innertube. The rubber protects the shot bag from muzzle or cylinder blast. I rest my wrists on a folded towel. I saw a fellow on the internet used a piece of wood to rest his chin on so the sight picture doesn't swim around. That sounds like a good idea but I haven't tried it. Use an aperture on your glasses to sharpen up the sights. Consistent grip is of course necessary.

Porthos: Attached is a photo of the rest I use to shoot 38 HBWC's at 100 yards and beyond. I have recently added a shelf to fully support the bag. The left hand squeezes the bag for elevation. I really have to concentrate to make sure I have a consistent firm grip, and if I do, I can get groups of less than 3 inches at 100 yards. The scope is set at 8 power. Hope this helps- Bill

Porthos: It's me again "cove". I don't think the picture loaded, tried several times. Any way the picture should show up in an article in TFS which I am about to send to Glenn. If you are really interested send me an email at ([email protected])

cove ... usually when a jpg doesn't load, it is too large ... just reduce the pixels in a photo manipulator. or send the pic to me email and i will squeeze it and post it. i would like to see your set-up.
also apparently some cell phones can't load pics here directly.
Edit: here is a squeezed pic of the rest. now 64x x 4xx pixels ken

Hello fellows,
I like the idea of the chin rest. I guess I'm a slow learner, I've never done that and that should sure stop the possibility of looking over your open sights at a angle. Although I think I will rig up a firm bag instead of using a wood 2X4 for a chin rest.

I have had excellent results using this simple, inexpensive, but VERY usable pistol rest. it works well for me and certainly doesn't "break the bank".

I have access to a Ransom Rest but after buying this, many years ago, I no longer use anything else for bench testing.
