unfinished stock

I want to replace the stock on my 1-1/2 rolling block rife.  I have built a few gunstocks with unfinished blanks, and I have had a few problems lately.  I want wood as close as possible to what Remington used 100 yrs ago--straight grain, preferably  quarter sawed grain.

I have to shoot off the bench these days, and I find that factory stocks on rolling block sporters have too much drop to shoot comfortably off sandbags.  I think I need a "mid-range" pattern or something else with a high comb to use a scope and have my cheek on the stock.

Can any of you tell me where I should go to order a blank.  Please share your experience.  Thanks.

I have had good wood and working relationship from two sources:

  • Treebone Carving has made several stocks for me and has done exceptional work: http://www.treebonecarving.com/
  • CPA Rifles has furnished the wood for my two rifles and it has been exceptional. They matched the grain and color for two foreends for one rifle.   https://www.cparifles.com/collections/stocks?page=2

Contact them and see what they have.

Many, many years ago I had a baby rolling block restocked and rebarreled.  The stock was made to fit my looooong arms and was cut with a cheek piece to suit scope use.  If it's not fun to shoot then you won't enjoy it or worse, shoot it so I suggested you build a stock to serve you.  Stocks can always be changed out.
