Has any one made or have a smith make a chamber seating die from Wilson's blank chamber seater ? I am presently working on a 6mmx223 for which they don't make a chamber seater. And am thinking seriously of doing this. Basically just a chambering job.

On the left -- Sierra 85 grain BTHP, as chambered OAL 2.458"

On the right -- NOE 246-105-FN GC AO2  As chambered OAL 2.579"

These 6mm's are a whole lot easier for these fumble fingers to handle than those dang miniscule 22's.

I have used several Wilson chamber seating dies for a while now and like them. But after asking, they said that they don't have the tooling for the 6mmx223. So no luck there. Didn't realize that one could just buy the inserts for the Forester though.

In the end, turns out that the Forester was cheaper than the Wilson anyway. Guess that's what happens when you stray off the beaten path so to speak. Kind of enjoy that though.

With an 8" twist and a long throat, It's kind of sort of like a heavy lifting .222.

Well, I did some searching and as I wrote, don't know how I missed Forester. This is the first full custom barrel that I have had and it's a new experience after working mostly with the old military rifles with their generous dimensions. This 14" full bull MGM Contender barrel is a completely different cat, with it's straight chamber and min. interior dimensions. No wiggle room for anything. The first three five shot groups with 75 grn.  jacketed HP's after break in averaged 1/2" at 50 yds.. and 1 1/4" at 100 with the 75 and 100 grn. jacketed.

And yes, I have fabricated something similar for the bottom of the grip and shoot off of bags.

That was easy...I just did a quick search.

The 6mmx223 sounds interesting. I hope you find a bullet and load that shoots well.

Have you ever thought of installing a T on the flat bottom of original Contender grip? Would this help hold pistol more steady while resting barrel on soft rest? You could fabricate one from flat aluminum stock and screw it to bottom of grip. Just remove the plastic cover on grip and replace with aluminum T.

This is an old post but thought that I would report the ultimate solution to my initial question. OU812 suggested the Forester St line seater which don't know why I never thought of them as I have had one for a 40X Rem. 25-06 for many years. Another moment, I guess.

Ordered one for the 6mmx223 and it arrived yesterday, special order. It was the answer. Without going into a long boring tribe, It solved several problems that I was facing while loading, which was basically at a stand still,  for that Contender 6mm. Works perfectly. And, was exactly what was needed.

Just illustrates that some times, simple suggestions can also produce desired results.

Thanks OU812.

Thanks Ken for the offer. thought up until I read your reply that I had an idea that might work using what I have here and those chucking reamers sure would have helped.

However, I never thought to check on Forester.  They do offer one in 6mmx223 and this new barrel's throat mic's dead nuts on at .243" so it looks like that would be the easy answer.  Thanks ou812.

Thanks for the help.

Would it be possible to operate the Forster or Redding inline seaters by hand, without mounting in press?

Forster cost about $70.00

hi RD,    in my reamer collection i have chucking reamers in 0.2440 and 0.2450 .... be glad to ship them as loaners  for postage ..  i don't have a 223 chamber reamer, which would make your project easy ... do have 222 saami if that would help .  pm me if ...

also you might consider an aluminum body ... probably last many thousand cycles as a seater ....

6mm x 45 dies are available from other manufacturers. I guess you are wanting the Wilson type to reload at the range?

RD, Yep, shoots a .365" bullet from a 1.88" long case. Sadly, the case is almost straight, but smaller than a 30-30 by .025". So I had Rocky Mountain Cartridge make me 20 cases for $40. It is the only old model Stevens I have ever seen with a heavy 34 inch barrel, so have never considered having it rebored to 38/55.

Once you have a .224 hole through it, you could just use a 223 Rem reamer and headspace +.010". Then finish the hole for 6MM.

Thanks Ric. Is that .35-35 Stevens a straight case?  What you describe, is doable for me, except for that bottle necked 223 case.

I made one for my .35-35 Stevens old model single shot rifle from scratch. Yes, bored a hole through for the bullet size, .365", then made a "D" reamer for the case fit. Other than making the reamer, a very simple job once the set-up was done. I used leaded steel round stock as it only had to hold the case and bullet square and there was no wear or hardness required. Used drill rod stock for the seating stem and threaded for a nut on top for adjustment and to push against. HTH, Ric
