I read in the last Fouling Shot where Ed Harris shot a .38 Spl and  Win 452AA powder.  I've shot up all my 452AA but have a ton of 473AA left.  Can't find any good load suggestions in my manuals as they are either too old or too new. I'm after a couple loads for 150-173 grain cast and would prefer to keep them below +P as the revolver isn't a +P model.

I'm also after the same for cast 150-180 grains in the .357.

Any suggestions Ed?   I do have a burning rate table that gives me approximations based on 473AA and how it matches up to handgun powder that's still manufactured.

hey Billwnr, I used to like 473 in the 9mm, nice soft loads, bit messy though. For my 38SPL I was using 4.0gns under a 125CON pushed down flush with the case mouth (my loads, my gun). Any load that you have for Unique or 800X will be good enough as they are pretty close to each other, I swapped over to ADI AP70, works equally well in my Cadet and 32/20, what I did find with the 473 is that I needed to shake the tin each time I used it as I found it gravity segregated, same issue with the 452.

Unfortunately, I never used 473AA in handguns.  Back in my Bullseye pistol competition days (1970s-1980s) 452AA was THE powder of choice for .38 Special and .45 ACP wadcutter and if you had a Phelps or Star machine already set up for Bullseye you could substitute 452AA in the powder measure with no changes and keep going.

As for 473AA I really have no clue.

Well, dang Ed.  I thought you'd have the answer.  There's a couple of current powders that are close to 473AA so I can figure out a starting load and work from there.  I wished I'd known 452AA was so close to Bullseye back when I was shooting it.  Had to "wing it" with that powder also and for me it shot well with cast bullets in the .44 Mag.

The answer is 4.0 grains of 473AA behind a 158 grain SWC.  Tested them about 15 minutes ago.  WSR primer, mixed .38 special cases.  Apparently I have enough 473AA for 35,000 .38 special loads.  Don't have that many primers though.

Used a lot in 9mm also. Speer #11 shows loads for it in 38 Spcl.

158 SWC 4.4 grs 762 fps 4.8 grs - 864 fps

Nice powder that meters well.
