Had the same problem; must be poor quality construction. (I'd only been using them since I started casting, ca. 1952.)
I used Gorilla Glue to piece the handles together, and to glue the mold handle tangs into the handles. Been a year or 2 now, and the Gorilla Glue is holding up fine, even with the heat, which, as you know, is considerable.
Easy to use stuff; used it often in my model aviation life.

I have Gorilla glue as I am a woodworker & absolutely love the stuff! I bought the original J-B Weld as it says that it will withstand up to 550 degrees. Shoot, after reading your post I realized I could have just used my Gorilla glue. Go figure. Anyway I'm getting my lathe set up so I can turn 3 sets of handles. Can't find my spur center. Drat!
If someone else had of done to me what I did to myself . . . I'd have killed him. Humility is an asset. Heh - heh.
